While browsing the internet, I found a series of animations titled Azania Rises. These animations are being made by Formation Animation Studios, located in South Africa. The studio was founded by Okai-Farayi Chinyanga, who at the moment also works on storyboarding and concept art.

As you know, I am really into 3D animation, and in the case of Azania Rises I found interesting is that they are using Reallusion’s Character Creator and iClone, for character creation and animation respectively. They are also using Unreal Engine 4 for rendering.

Formation Animation Studios has team members from different parts of Africa: Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and the DRC, and, as Azania Rises progressed, other companies got involved, like Sound and Motion Studios (responsible for the sound work of many Netflix shows) and Pressure Cooker Studios, working on music.

Azania Rises is a multi-season series, and it starts with the premise of the entire African continent uniting into a single country, Azania. The story follows Azania's Murwi Unit members, peacekeepers that travel the world to offer humanitarian aid. However, there are factions that are not happy about Azania's prosperity and seek to undermine and divide the nation once again.

While having a brief conversation with Farayi, he told me they decided to use Reallusion software because it offered everything they needed for their pipeline: character creation and customization, and character animation with advanced tools like animation mixing and lips sync.

Azania Rises is Formation Animation Studios’ flagship product and has been under development since 2019. I look forward for the finished project.
