When It's Impossible to Concentrate

Recently I've been through some major life changing events. My world has been turned upside down (well, maybe downside up… depends on the perspective).

The thing is, sometimes your life changes so drastically, you just can't do the things you're used to doing, even those that bring you joy or disconnect you from the daily grind. You find yourself trying to make some time for that creative escape, only to get frustrated when no amount of effort allows you to concentrate. You try several times, because you know it would be good for you, you need this, but it just won't happen. You stare and stare at the proverbial blank page swearing at the muses for having abandoned you.

If you ever find yourself in this situation, I want to ask just one thing of you: Be kind to yourself.

You're adjusting.

There's no need to keep putting pressure on yourself, even if it might seem it's for the right reasons. It is ok not to be able to concentrate. Adding that extra layer of concern will only make things worse. 

You can let yourself try other things you never allowed yourself to try. And even that might not work. Maybe you find yourself listening to music, just staring at a window, or a wall. It may sound depressive, and you may find yourself desperately trying to snap out of that state. I get it. It is uncomfortable, to say the least.

But there's one thing that nobody taught us, that can help. The truth is, pain, big changes, or uncomfortable situations are just part of being alive. The wrong path is to always try avoiding these feelings at all costs.

You may one day find yourself withering away because in order to avoid having unpleasant experiences, you end up avoiding having experiences at all. This will, in time, hurt so much more than anything you wanted to avoid in the first place.

The right frame of mind is to acknowledge life comes with good and bad stimuli and, instead of trying to save yourself from the bad ones, you need to learn how to deal with them the healthiest way possible.

You will be able to focus on what's important to you again. This too shall pass. Just let yourself live this moment. Observe it, if you want, without judging it. You might even learn a thing or two about yourself in the process.
