Motion Weekly 43

Apr 28, 2020 at 11:00 pm by nickcharles

The Motion Weekly is a showcase of awe-inspiring short films, animation and motion graphic works from around the web. Some pieces featured have been created by professional studios, while others may be personal works. May this weekly segment serve to inspire you.

Though my original goal with this segment was to specifically highlight motion graphics and animated short films, it had evolved to also showcase incredible live-action, outstanding cinematography, and wicked cool experimental works. It's all motion, it's all inspiring. So, take the time to kick back and have a look at some fantastic work being produced out there. And, if you like what you see in this segment, please share it.

Framed

The first piece this week is an incredible stop-motion short that is not only well executed, but an equally great concept. I've mentioned time and again how much I love stop-motion, but the part in this short that really struck me was the ultra-realistic movement of the clay puppet at around 1:23. I've longed to put some time aside to try stop-motion myself, and that few seconds of animation is what I will be turning to again and again.

My Dead Dad's Porno Tapes

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE...look past the title of this piece!!! This short is an incredible and heartfelt look at a father-son relationship through the sifting of things the father left behind... This short was very well-written and crafted using old film footage, pictures, audio recordings and fantastic stop-motion work. There is something here in this piece for everyone who has dealt with the loss of a parent.

Was my father’s leftover stuff the key to who he really was?

Winner of the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the 2018 Ottawa International Animation Festival.

"Honest, funny, nostalgic and incredibly inventive, the recipient of this prize tells the story of a young man sifting through his late father’s belongings in an attempt to uncover the intimate details of his life. A perfectly arranged menagerie of old film footage, audio recordings, and meticulously crafted stop motion animation, it is a beautiful tribute to a complicated but devoted father-son relationship. We are proud to present the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival to “My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes” by Charlie Tyrell." - Vimeo Curation

Bendito Machine VI - Carry On

Jossie Malis is back with yet another short film in his Bendito Machine series. This incredible series uses silhouette animation to convey real world problems, yet also tell of our love-hate relationship with machines and technology. If you have not seen the past episodes, be sure to check them out here.

Zombie Flowers

This is a truly compelling piece. An experimental and personal work which was created using Cinema 4D and After Effects.
