Planning a trip to LA July 28-Aug. 1 for SIGGRAPH 2019?

Before you wander aimlessly around the Los Angeles Convention Center, here are a few things you should check out.

The Keynote

Victoria Alonso, Marvel Studios’ Executive Vice President of Production, will deliver this year's Keynote Session. Among other things, Alonso will speak to the challenges and importance of encouraging participation in our industries by those with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Diversity and inclusion will be a thread woven throughout the fabric of SIGGRAPH 2019.

New this year, the Adaptive Technology focus area highlights accessibility as an integral part of the inclusive future SIGGRAPH envisions – and showcases the new technologies that can transform and enhance lives.

The ACM SIGGRAPH Diversity and Inclusion Summit features informative and impactful speakers from a variety of backgrounds to demonstrate how diversity makes us stronger.

The summit's keynote is The Case for Diversity and the Lens of Intersectionality – Learn about the benefits of diversifying our workforce and strategies for creating a roadmap that facilitates change.

Panels will cover topics like Rendering Gender: Identity, Representation, and Sexuality in 3D Design, Interactive Media, and Animation; HERstories: Women Leaders in the Digital World; Inclusion of Diverse Talent With Outstanding Abilities; and Diversity, Collaboration, and Building Toward an Inclusive Organization.

For the more business minded, the Business Symposium will explore the intersection of technology, creativity, and business, featuring speakers with a broad range of experience to explore the future of CG and how emerging technologies shape and affect business.

It also includes a Fireside Chat titled Diversity and Equity as Business Imperatives. It will give insight on fostering diversity and equity in the workplace, and understand how the success of underrepresented communities in businesses leads to increased creativity and innovation, and healthier work environments.

Other stuff worth looking at:

• Experience the world through the eyes of a man (and his robots) living with paralysis in "Being Henry," a first-person, interactive documentary in the Village.

• Wrap yourself in the research behind “Air Hugs,” a large-scale, interactive installation in the Art Papers program that examines the relationship between inflatables and hugs as tools for generating contemporary forms of experience through architecture.

• Try "Arque" — an artificial, biomimicry-inspired anthropomorphic tail — in the Emerging Technologies section of the Experience Hall to understand how tails can improve body function and mobility.

Autodesk's booth and presentations

Autodesk will unveil the latest updates to its media and entertainment tools for artists in VFX, animation, games, VR/AR and beyond. New improvements will connect creative workflows, streamline production, and help teams bring more engaging content to audiences worldwide.

SIGGRAPH attendees can visit Autodesk at booth #1211 for demos and presentations of Maya, Shotgun Software, Arnold and Flame and 3ds Max. Stay tuned for the latest news at Siggraph about AI-enhanced workflows, artist-friendly pipelines, and creating effects procedurally with Bifrost in Maya.

Autodesk’s Vision Series is returning to SIGGRAPH this year, advance registration is open. The Vision Series will feature technology previews and a full slate of programming spanning open source initiatives, AI and machine learning, design data, streamlining production pipelines, new approaches to creative workflows and more.

It will also include presentations on Autodesk’s latest developments and recent film, television and game projects from Autodesk customers such as Animal Logic, ILM, The Mill, Scanline and more.

Blender celebrates 20 years

Blender attended SIGGRAPH in LA for the first time to present version 1.60 on a floppy disk.

This is the year Blender will enjoy more involvement and contributions by the industry. The much anticipated 2.80 release is going to help with that tremendously.

Throughout the conference, Blender Foundation will have a small booth (#710) where it will show off 2.80 along with some surprises.

On Monday, July 29, Ton Roosendaal will present past year’s work and plans for next year.

Unreal's presentations

At this year’s conference, Unreal Engine will start with a presentation Monday, July 29 for everyone ( no conference badge required) in The Orpheum Theatre at on 842 South Broadway.

At Unreal Engine User Group, Unreal will have networking, beverages, and demos starting at 3 p.m., followed by an amazing lineup of presentations starting at 4 p.m. Featured guests include ILMxLAB, Walt Disney Imagineering, Digital Domain, The Third Floor, Cine Tracer, and more!
