Six Weeks with Character Creator 3, Week Five

For a period of 6 weeks, I’ll be learning and creating with Reallusion’s Character Creator 3 Pipeline. I’ll be starting out fresh, learning the basics and working on a few creative projects that I hope will expand my skills in CC3. I will share my discoveries and mistakes along the way. Note that I’ll be using the most current version of the program (as of May 30, 2019). Reallusion has kindly made the program available to me for this series. Quick Recap
In last weeks episode, I exported my CC3 character, Clint, into the Unity game engine. Following a very good Reallusion tutorial on this subject, I successfully brought Clint into Unity with his clothes and textures. Unfortunately, his hat didn’t make the trip. Since I bought the hat as part of a package at the Reallusion store. I was determined to bring it into Unity along with my Clint character


The Problem with the Hat
As much as I wanted to move on to another project, I really wanted that hat to be part of Clint’s character (like his clothes). After many hours of experiment and research (with no real mention of this in the CC3 manual) I discovered that CC3 and IClone treat “props” differently than “accessories”. The hats that I purchased from Reallusion were sold as props. It’s my understanding that you can’t attach or link props to your character, but you can with accessories. I even tried bringing the character in to IClone and attaching it there and then exporting back to CC3 (nice features). However, this didn’t work when I imported Clint into Unity - his hat still wasn’t attached.

I also ran into problems with the hair shader which I couldn’t resolve. You can see from the picture below that even with choosing different shader types within Unity, I still couldn’t get the hair to look right. Now, I know this is possible as I’ve watched several tutorials on how it is done, but the process still eludes me. Sigh.

I’ve got a query into my CC3 guru, M.D. McCallum, but nothing in time for this episode. More to come.

Exporting to other Programs
One of the main features of CC3 Pipeline is it’s ability to export to other programs. Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Blender, Unity and Unreal are the export presets, but any program that accepts .obj and .fbx format will work. The key issue, however, is how the new program deals with materials. Reallusion provides a great script for Unity which fixes most everything (ahem…hair, please?) but every program I exported to required extra work making the materials compatible. The process is not overly difficult, but it is time consuming. I’m sure Reallusion is working on simplifying this process. There are two major updates coming this year, so maybe this will be something they will address soon.


 At this point, I’m enjoying working with CC3 Pipeline even with the export issues. I am discovering that although the program is easy to use, some seemly simple things (like attaching a damn hat) can be complicated. I do have to admit that it’s also my own ignorance that slows things down. Any program, even a simple one, can take a lot of time to learn effectively. Since I only have six weeks, I’m rushing things a bit and that is making for some slowdowns while I go back over what I have missed.

I’ll report on my final results with Clint’s hat next week along with a quick project and a summing up. Is it close to six weeks already?
