5 Mobile Apps to Help Artists

Artists have always relied on tools to help them make their work faster and/or better.

In the digital age, there are many helpers that translated from the material to the digital world in the way of apps. Here I present you some of the tools that will make great companions for your artistic endeavors.

Artist Grid

This is the digital version of a method that has been used forever for a reason: it works!

A great simple and free app for placing a grid over an existing photo. You can specify how many rows and columns you want or use presets. Other parameters include line thickness, line color and line transparency, all customizable. The image with the grid can be exported to a file or shared to other Android apps. You can also apply some filters like posterize, edges and black and white, to help you better visualize what’s important in the image.

Fino - Camera Lucida

Fino is the digital version of the old but great camera lucida. It’s an optical assistant that uses your device’s camera to impose your real-time drawing with an image of your choice. This way, you see both the image and what your camera is capturing at the same time, so you can trace the image onto paper or canvas.

Easy Poser

EasyPoser is a human body pose app for artists to use as a reference. Have you ever wanted a personalized model to show various poses while drawing animation, illustration or sketching? More often than not, you won’t find a photo with the exact pose you’re looking for, so this tool is great for that situation. You pose your model exactly how you want it and see from the angle you want.

Gesture Practice Tool

This app lets you chose a folder to retrieve images from to practice gesture drawing or speed painting, as it will show you each image in the folder at a time interval that you choose. Most traditional artists practice this way as it helps you capture the important aspects of an image and not get lost in the details.

Dragon Mannequin

In the spirit of Easy Poser, here you have a dragon figure that you can pose to your liking. As dragons don’t exist in real life, it is guaranteed that you won’t find photos to use for reference, so this is an extremely helpful tool for any fantasy artist. You can also adjust camera, background, and lighting, so you make your own little scene with more accuracy.
