What we are doing at Siggraph + Live-Stream events at the conference

We'll be attending the Siggraph conference this coming week. If you live on Mars, the conference is the largest computer graphics gathering in the world (and the most prestigious) with over 20,000 attending over a 5 day period. This year, alas, we'll only be able to attend Sunday and Wednesday of the conference due to personal commitments. However, even two days can fill up with all kinds of interesting and fun meetings, demos, displays, galleries and, most importantly, people!

The following is a short list of some of the things we are doing at Siggraph 2017 followed by a collection of live-streaming activities you can watch without attending the conference physically. I look forward to the day when they have virtual attendance and you just pop on your headset and go to events just as if you were there.

Sunday, July 30

We'll be kicking off the day with a visit to the Siggraph 2017 Art Gallery. Look to the Renderosity Magazine FaceBook page for a short live-stream while we are there. One of our favorite events at Siggraph, the Art Gallery has a high level of competition so the chosen art works are the very best. Art Gallery works are usually themed. This year they the theme is titled, Unsettled Artifacts: Technological Speculations from Latin America. You can check out the art listings here. The video below also gives a nice preview.

Next we'll be going to the Blender Community Meeting. I love this event because it is so unique and individual. Ton Roosendaal, the founder of the Blender Foundation, usually has every single person attending introduce themselves and say why they are there. It might sound tedious, but it's not at all. You feel like you are part of the group in ways that no other event at Siggraph provides.

After the introduction, Ton goes through the achievements of the Blender Foundation and status of current projects and builds. The big announce this year will be version 2.8 which will feature several new additions including Grease Pencil and the real-time render engine for the view port, Eevee.

Although this is a short day, we plan on checking out some recommended events/presentations and will report on them in a daily briefing here at Renderosity Magazine.

Wednesday, Aug 2

Renderosity Magazine be meeting with various software and hardware companies most of the day. I'm very excited to be hooking up with Maxon's Paul Babb to talk about the new Cinema 4D and any announcements they may have. Will meet with Reallusion to chat about iClone 7 and Crazy Talk Animator. Lenovo, NVIDIA, Chaos Group, Autodesk and several other VR production groups will also be on my agenda. We will update Wednesday night with an outline of the day. We plan on recording a lot of media (including several audio interview) so keep your eyes peeled on the front page of Renderosity Magazine for updates.

How to Attend Various Events at Siggraph via Live-Stream

Several companies and groups have made it a habit to live-stream their presentations and events. Chief among them is Siggraph itself! There are over a dozen "sessions" as they call them that will live-stream. You can see a full list of them here.

Highlights include: Keynote Session: Fireside chat with Floyd Norman, Course: Build Your Own VR Display and Real-Time Live! Our favorite though is the Maxon live-stream event (C4D Live) at their booth for 3 days. They always have a great line-up of speakers who demonstrate all kinds of interesting tips and aspects of Cinema 4D. You can read a full list of the events and how to hook up to their live stream feed here.

Now, if you happen to be in Los Angels this coming week, I urge to to attend at least one day at the LA Convention Center. Check Google for free tickets if you can't afford them. More info on attending here.

  • The main Siggraph 2017 page has a wealth of information on all aspects of the conference including a free download of their full conference schedule.
  • Siggraph FB page will have ongoing updates along with their own Live-Streaming events.
