I often wonder if you are born with an artist gene because so many tell me it's the truth. So, if that's true, does that mean I was born with a writer gene? I mean, my mom was a writer when she was in her teens, but she didn't want that as a career. Therefore, I think it's true that you're born with a creative side if both of your parents are artists. Sure, there are exceptions to every rule, but I believe it's more likely than not.

I decided to chat with Renderosity vendor/member Tom Mitchell (Dreamlandmodels) in order to get his take on art.

"Art has always been part of my life. I liked pen sketching," says Tom. "You have to be born with it. You can't just wake up one morning and say, 'I want to be an artist.' "

Since junior high, Tom has been interested in art.

"In junior high, I was in drafting classes and mechanical design," says Tom.

And, by high school, he was helping his teacher!

"I'd get mine done in the first hour and I really enjoyed it," recalls Tom.

Tom has always had an artistic bone in his body because he came from a family of artists.

"My dad was an inventor and photographer and my grandfather was an engineer, so I caught their passionate side," says Tom.

But, around 40, he found out he had a severe case of Attention Deficit Disorder.

"I felt relieved that I was not stupid; I just had a chemical imbalance," says Tom.

So, Tom--who absolutely loved art--was thrilled to know there wasn't something seriously wrong with him. He believes art to be "a spiritual thing." People like Tom put their heart and soul into every model, piece and portrait because they're both passionate and dedicated when it comes to their artwork.
