NVIDIA's Star Trek-inspired design lab offers early access

Star Trek fans know the seminal show has long influenced the development of technology and its handprint is evident in NVIDIA's new virtual reality offering, NVIDIA Holodeck.

Announced Tuesday, NVIDIA has opened early access to Holodeck, its intelligent VR platform, for select designers and developers.

NVIDIA Holodeck brings designers, developers and their customers together from anywhere in the world to discover, build and explore creations in a highly realistic, collaborative and physically simulated VR environment.

NVIDIA announced the development of the program that will allow rendering large, photorealistic and highly detailed models, in real time, at life-like scale back in May.

Now product designers, application developers, architects and other 3D content creators can apply for Holodeck early access.

NVIDIA Holodeck early access is the first opportunity for a select group of designers, developers and inventors to experiment with its capabilities and guide future development.

Enter the Holodeck

While it's not exactly Commander Riker in a Bourbon Street Jazz club or Capt. Pichard playing PI Dixon Hill, NVIDIA's Holodeck allows users to virtually interact with an immersive, photorealistic experience using VR gear like an Oculus.

Holodeck allows product designers, application developers, architects and other 3D content creators to interact with each other and a photorealistic scale model in a VR environment.

"It's an unparalleled environment for deploying and testing AI-based agents -- and will only get better as we add more AI capabilities," said Bob Pette, vice president of Professional Visualization at NVIDIA.

NVIDIA thinks it will drive creativity, provide a faster and more accurate understanding of a scene or model, streamline the review process and reduce the need for physical prototyping.

Because of its realistic graphics, accurate real-world physics, and multi-user collaboration, Holodeck is already used as a powerful design lab for AI agents trained with the NVIDIA Isaac simulator.

Rendering large and highly detailed models in different environments before deploying them in the real world can help designers create superior, safer products.

Frank Delgado from NASA's Hybrid Reality Lab said his teams of engineers can use Holodeck to go where no one has gone before in the design process.

"During our design process, teams of our engineers and scientists work together to imagine an idea, plan a design, create that model, experiment and test that solution, then take time to reiterate and improve the original -- all steps that are crucial to mission success at NASA," said Delgado, lead for the HRL.

"With Holodeck, we will be able to clearly visualize our models, easily collaborate in a physically simulated environment, and review to ensure the efficiency and safety of our designs," Delgado added.

Forthcoming updates to Holodeck will address the growing demand for the deployment of deep learning techniques in virtual environments and include capabilities for AI-based training, simulation, content creation and the discovery of new ideas.
