Nick's Notes: Trapcode Particular 3
Staff Writer By: Nick Sorbin (nickcharles)
Red Giant is a great company because they don't just sell software for filmmakers and effects artists, but are filmmakers themselves. They enjoy what they do, and a look at Red Giant's short films and demos is best evidence of this. In short: they know what you want, they know what you need.
In August, Red Giant released Trapcode Suite 14, which is a fantastic set of 11 tools for motion graphics and visual effects. Including the new Trapcode Particular 3 and Trapcode Form 3, plus an updated Trapcode Tao, Trapcode Suite 14 is a fantastic release you'll want to check out. Every tool in the suite runs on Mac and Windows and is compatible with Adobe After Effects, but some of the tools also work in additional host-applications. I'll be spotlighting individual tools within the suite over the coming weeks.
This week I'm putting the spotlight on Trapcode Particular 3, which allows you to create stunning and complex particle effects, like smoke/fire, trails, environments, etc. for film/motion graphics. Trapcode Particular 3 features GPU acceleration, an overhaul of its Designer interface, an updated aux system, as well as many more included presets, sprites and objects.
GPU acceleration adds a noticeable speed increase in Trapcode Particular 3. Depending on your system, you could see a boost of over 4 times that of previous versions.
If you haven't upgraded since Particular included the Designer interface, you are in for a real treat. Particular's Designer feature is wonderful for allowing you to quickly build up effects and get instant, animated feedback. And it's really a great way to find a starting point to apply to your comp and then further tweak the parameters.
With over 300 preset effects (210 new) that you can plainly see in the Designer interface, it's never been easier to get started. And, best of all, you can now combine multiple particle systems in one instance of Particular and still save it as a single preset.
Another cool new feature is the ability to use 3D objects as particle emitters. Just grab one from Particular's library of over 60 OBJs, or load an OBJ of your own. Easy-peasy. And an updated Aux system now allows you to bring in custom particles.
Particular 3 is at its best, and is much more fun to use. It used to be tedious work playing blindly with parameters to get what you wanted, but now you can easily start with a preset and tweak it, or build it up block by block with variations of emitters, particles, physics, shading, and the Aux system.
If you were to only purchase one tool from the suite, it should be Particular, but there is no denying the value of the full suite.
Head over to Red Giant's website and see all the features of the new Trapcode Suite 14. Also on the website, you'll find plenty of resources for getting started with all of Red Giant's products. And know that you can purchase with confidence as their Red Pledge Guarantee makes sure you are happy with every purchase.
