Halloween in Black & White: 5 Public Domain Horror Films
I grew up in a time when you eagerly poured over the newspapers movie listings for October in order to find a horror movie you wanted to watch. Didn't matter what time it was on, you circled it with your pen and made a list. That was how you saw movies like White Zombie and The Tingler. There were no dvd's or Netflix.
The horror movies I liked the most where usually in beautiful black & white. Well, beautiful is probably overstating it as the biggest television screens in those days (late 50's early 60's) were on 19" diagonally. I loved sitting in my little chair in front of, what seemed to me, a huge tv screen watching Lon Chaney whine about the wolfman curse or Vincent Price howl when the tingler got him.
I'd like to share five favorite horror films with you. All public domain. All in beautiful (well...) black & white. There are many sources to watch films like these on the internet. I like the collection at archive.org and at Horrortheque. And, of course, the infinite YouTube.
