"Greetings from NY"
Staff Writer By: Hope Kumor (hopeandlove)
There's two things in life that I have a weakness for: Christmas and New York City. So, when I saw Renderosity member Robert_Ripley 's image, I couldn't help but miss Christmas. And, also, this photo isn't just a tree in New York, it symbolizes something to him and I wanted to know what exactly.
Please tell me the backstory behind the photo.
The backstory behind the photo is, that it was a childhood dream to be in that city. Since I was a kid, I collected posters of New York from magazines, shopping mall, etc.
Every time I saw something about the city on tv, my eyes became that big. It just remained a dream for me...kind of unreal and unreachable because it´s on the other side of the planet, which I never could visit.
Until then I was afraid of flying, but in 2014, I decided to put an end to it. So, I decided to fly to Corsica, which only was a 1 1/2 hour flight, which was long enough for a test flight.
I "survived" that flight and half year later, I decided to go big and fulfill my dream.
What inspired you to take it?
I wanted to have just another memory of my trip like every other visitor I think. Before the trip, I had chosen some spots which I wanna visit at any rate. Sure I could have taken a picture in the afternoon, when it´s not much crowded so I could choose the best point to take a picture from.
But the best moment you can take a picture of that tree is in the evening when it´s completely dark outside and the plaza is full of life. You can see the sparkling lights, hear the people screaming and having fun.
These are the sounds I will always hear every time when I look at that picture.
What does this photo symbolize?
For me, it means tradition. Most of us have a Christmas tree at home I guess. It symbolizes to bring everyone together (again). Not only family members at home, but bringing people together from all around the world at this place. Having a nice and peaceful time with Christmas music.
It was nice to see even it was crowded around the plaza, everyone was able to take a good picture and have a good time.
Nobody was in a hurry or pushed others around to take a photo. Everyone could enjoy that time of the year, the tree, the music or enjoy ice skating.
What is the meaning behind the photo?
This photo means for me at first, "Look at me...I made it. Dreams can become real".
I did what was unthinkable for me for so many years. I was so excited and I wanted to let everyone know. That´s why I shared it with friends and family members and of course here at Renderosity.
I got much response from them, "Michael on tour in the big big world." It felt so good to make others at home jealous.
But they celebrated it with me when I returned.
Why did you decide to take it?
Well, it's a beautiful tree. Even it´s not the biggest as far as I know, it´s simple and unique. And as i said it´s not only about the tree.
It's about showing people having a good time ice skating or just watching it. It´s something special for them too. They enjoyed that few minutes being beside or under that tree as much as I did. I think for most of them (maybe for me too) it will remain the only time they will be visiting that place.
