Chit-Chat With Digital Artist Justin Gedak | Renderosity artist, gothic art, gothic artist, digital art, Justin Gedak

I decided to browse for digital arts who have fallen in love with art, are making and creating beautiful portraits, and when I found Medieval Gothic Fantasy Portrait Paintings, Justin Gedak, I knew I had to learn more about him and ask him about his background in digital art.

"With every creation comes a mystery to be explored. A story to be experienced. The not knowing of what comes next is what drives me forward. What pushes me to keep creating. To keep learning and growing. To never stop changing," according to Justin's website.

So, I started with the obvious question.

Tell me about yourself.

I'm 33, and living alone at the edge of a mountain about an hour outside of Vancouver British Columbia, and I am a digital artist specializing in medieval gothic fantasy portrait paintings.

How did you get into digital art?

I come from a traditional oil painting background, and began experimenting with digital painting as a more efficient way to create artwork. It didn't take long for me to completely fall in love with creating art digitally. I love being able to paint hundreds of layers without having to wait for the paint to dry, and the freedom with being able to experiment as much as I want knowing anything can be undone is really amazing.

Why did you want to become a digital artist?

I don't have a very clear answer for that. It's just something that feels right. Words can't quite explain. It's as if these portraits are waiting to be uncovered, and I crave the pursuit of revealing their mysteries. Creating them digitally just seems like the most natural way for me to create them, if that makes any sense.

What is it about art that you love?

Although people often think that I only paint sad women, what I love about my portraits is the sensation of hope that they bring up. To me they're examples of people who have gone through terrible times, but have managed to retain strength and beauty. They're warriors who refuse defeat, and I think that's something that we all wish we could be more like. To know that no matter what horrors life throws at us, we'll be able to push past it, and be stronger for it.

What does art mean to you?

To me art is emotion. Experiencing it makes you feel something. Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, comfort, unease, nostalgia, it depends on the piece of artwork. But yeah, for myself art is an expression of emotion that makes you feel something. The more honest the emotion, the better the art.

How did you become so passionate about art and why?

It seems that with life, it's so easy to become more and more numb to the things around us as the years pass by. I find that art helps me feel again. It sparks a light in the dark, and reminds me that I'm alive. Also, pulling these images up from the shadows has a very satisfying sort of excitement to it. The not knowing of what comes next. The exploration of creativity. These aspects also help me feel alive.
