Last week, I wrote a post in the Creative Artists in Nashville Facebook group about profiling new and undiscovered artists. I received a bunch of inquiries asking that I check out their artwork, website, etc and I was thrilled. I was honored to see so many artists contacting me to view their art pieces. From digital artists, graphic designers, painters to clay modeling, I was happy to ask them a bunch of questions about their artistic background.
My first chat was with Shane Miller of Nashville.
Tell me about yourself.
I was born and raised in Cumberland, MD, a small town in the mountains of western Maryland. I moved to Nashville at the end of 2013 to pursue art and music.
How did you get into art?
As a child in elementary school, I would constantly doodle landscapes on the back of my worksheets. As a child, I enjoyed spending time sketching out ideas and whatever was on my mind. When I was thirteen, I was tutored bi-weekly by a watercolor artist. My art grew from there and I continued to paint sporadically throughout my teenage years. When I was twenty-one, I started painting consistently and began working with oil and acrylic mediums. Three years later, I now dedicate most of my time to painting full-time.
Why did you want to become an artist?
I believe there is a whirlwind of colors, emotions, shapes, and scenes within my mind. I feel compelled to project those feelings onto a canvas. I find happiness in the act of painting.
What is it about art that you love?
I love art because it has a way of tapping into a person's soul so easily. I love when someone views my work and feels a connection. Most times, that connection is a sense of nostalgia or sadness. Not a sadness in a depressing sense, but as in a longing for a distant place that their heart craves.
What does art mean to you?
I will simply say this about art and what it means to me; I am free.
How did you become so passionate about art and why?
I believe I became more passionate about art as I explored painting and the way it makes me feel. Every day is a new adventure when painting. I never know what the end result will be or what will materialize on the canvas. That is what I love and what I crave.
Where do you work right now?
Currently, I paint full time and also travel as a guitarist with an independent country artist.
How does art make you feel?
Art makes me feel alive. When I am painting I feel lost in the moment time has no meaning.
What emotions stir inside of you while you paint?
Mostly feelings of nostalgia; I also feel a longing to be at the place I am painting. I want to take a walk through the scenes I depict on the canvas.
