Title: Beginner's Guide to Sculpting Characters in Clay
I have dabbled in sculpture over the years, mainly learning my way around the art and through several clay types on my own. Though I've browsed some books on sculpting, I've not come across one single book that covers as much as 3dtotal's Beginner's Guide to Sculpting Characters in Clay.
This book covers all the essentials you would need to know to get started in sculpting, from choosing tools and type of clay, to techniques and tips throughout several projects. More than that, it's a great reference to keep handy.
The book starts off with a wonderful introduction by the Shiflett Brothers, whose fantasy sculptures have appeared worldwide. Included in this are several pictures of their works. After this intro is a section on tools and several different clay types, followed by a quick look at human anatomy for sculpting, as this is a book geared to character creation.
The main part of this book, however, is the character projects, which are shown in detail with clear instruction and plenty of accompanying pictures. There are five character projects, each presented by a different artist. With each project there is a list of tools and materials, instruction on creating armatures, and clear, step-by-step details that you can follow right along with to the finished piece. Most valuable are the tips throughout that really help you learn how to sculpt.
The book itself is beautiful, well bound, and an exceptional layout with tons of full-color pictures. This really is not just a learning guide, but also something you can reference at any time.
Clay sculpting is a really fun and intense artistic journey. Though I do love digital tools, I find it immensely satisfying creating by hand. If you have an interest in sculpting, you don't want to miss this book.
