Review: Fotojet - Photo Editor, Collage Creator and Graphic Design Application
"This free tool gives you multiple options for creating collage, email headers, Instagram posts with professional-looking text, and more, while producing results that look like they were rendered in the studio" - Arianna Gael, filehippo.com
Fotojet is an application designed for users who want to create cool graphics or a photo-collage, but don't have the time (or money) to learn a pro-level application like Adobe Photoshop. And since Fotojet is a template-based application it's pretty easy to look through the templates, find something that looks great and then add your own text or photos. It's really a neat tool that is entirely free for the standard edition (with some limitations).
Fotojet Online and Standalone Application
Fotoject will probably be used primarily as an online browser-based application. However, there is a nice standalone version you can download to use on your Mac or PC. There is no mobile version yet, but it is coming soon according to the Fotojet FAQ.
Working with Fotojet
There are three parts to the Fotojet workflow depending upon what you want to create: the Photo Editor, the Graphic Designer and the Collage Maker. Once you've decided on a project, you simply upload your photos/images to the Fotoject site (you do have to register to use the free version) and then choose what templates you want to work with.
For the Collage Maker, you then browse through the collage templates until you find the one you want the insert your photos into the template of choice, add your text and save. While working with the photos, Fotoject anticipates your workflow and gives you the option to resize, change contrast and even use a photographic effect.
This basic workflow holds true for the other types of photo projects as well: The Photo Editor and the Graphic Designer. Browse, choose template, add your content, make adjustments and save or post to Facebook if you like!
Great Selection of Templates
An application like FotoJet lives and dies on the quality of their templates. Boy, are they great! I was surprised to see not only standard layouts for graphic design and collages, but very modern looking ones that could easily be found in a major magazine or high-end website. You can find silly, jokey templates all the way up to complex layouts that look very, very cool.
There is also many types of clipart available in Fotoject from Weddings to simple shapes and more. All are drop-and-drag and resizable, so you can put them into any project with ease.
All of the previous projects I've mentioned are free. But there is a paid Fotojet Plus account which provides:
- Access the advanced editing tools, custom size, save/load project features.
- 600+ Premium Templates Easier to find a design from abundant premium templates to meet your needs.
- 500+ Premium Resources Premium clipart images, fonts, effects, overlays and frames make your creations stand out from the crowd.
- Ad Free
- Edit in a larger canvas without distractions.
- Priority Support Service
There are two paid plans for Fotoject Plus:
- Billed Monthly $4.99 USD/month
- Billed Annually $2.91 USD/month = $34.99 USD/year, saving 40%

Is Fotoject Plus worth it?
The problem any company has in offering a free application along with paid upgrade is balance. Too often companies offer a kind of crippleware that leaves you frustrated because you can't complete a project the way you want it to look without an upgrade.
I'm very glad to say that Fotoject gets the balance right, although one could always wish for more advanced functions included in the free version. Overall though, the Fotoject Free version is outstanding and a pleasure to create with.
If you are someone like me and you don't have a lot of time to design a collage or design a poster or splash page image, Fotojet is a big time saver. And the results look great! I had no problems working with Fotojet. The interface is attractive both in the standalone (which was a bit faster for me than the online version) or online versions. Fotoject anticipates your workflow which gets you to the creative part more quickly.
The Photo Editor is perhaps weaker than the the Graphic Designer and Collage Maker in that you don't have as many options as say PicMonkey, but the difference is slight. And there's no option for drop-shadowing text which is odd, but I'm pretty sure they'll add this to the editor in the future along with a smartphone/ipad app version of Fotojet.
I loved working with Fotojet and urge you to try this application out for any graphics or photo projects you might have. The result will look professional and smart. Plus, you won't have to spend hours and hours in Fotojet because the application makes it easy to be creative and to have fun!
