Amazon Launches Video Game Engine: Lumberyard

This week, Amazon Games launched their AAA game engine: Lumberyard.

After their recent purchases of Double Helix Game Studio and the Crytek Game Engine, everyone was expecting Amazon would announce a new game engine, but the fact that Lumberyard is such a complete game package right out of the gate is surprising. Plus, Amazon is giving Lumberyard away for free!

This should start some knee shaking in the Unity, Unreal and the Stingray camps. Lumberyard will be in direct competition with these established game engines. Add to this the fact that Amazon owns the monster gamer website, Twitch, along with massive web service capability, and you have excellent elements in place for Lumberyard's to appeal to a wide variety of users.

However, I'd advice new users to read the Amazon Lumberyard FAQ to find out how distributing anything yhou make with Lumberyard differs from, say, Unity or Unreal.

From the new Amazon Lumberyard website:

Amazon Lumberyard is a free, cross-platform, 3D game engine for you to create the highest-quality games, connect your games to the vast compute and storage of the AWS Cloud, and engage fans on Twitch.

By starting game projects with Lumberyard, you can spend more of your time creating great gameplay and building communities of fans, and less time on the undifferentiated heavy lifting of building a game engine and managing server infrastructure.
